Back Pain and Depression

The spine is a problem

It has been proven chronic back pain is directly correlated with depression. The more your pain increases, the worse depression gets.  For many, pilates has proven to be the best way to alleviate pain and thus depression.

Pilates is a low impact form of exercise alleviating pressure on the spine, bones and joints.  The reformer is a great way to assist the body in order to stretch and strengthen the muscles by providing resistance and aiding in movement.  There are also many mat exercises that are great for restoring movement to the body, but many teachers are not equipped to teach these as they are too focused on the “order”. The “classical order” is not meant for every body.  In fact, when it comes to restoring spine function, pre-pilates can be curtail to building strength from the core out. These seemingly small movements are often necessary for establishing proper movement patterns that will prepare the body for more intense workouts.

Whether mat or reformer, the importance of pilates is to strengthen the flutes, hamstrings, back and of course the core. working every single muscle group is important for balancing the body and establishing good posture so that full range of motion becomes available.  The key is to find a teacher who knows what they are doing.  The rest is in the work.  Proper alignment of the pelvis, shoulders, ribs and head are what you want out of a good class.

Remember, be patient.  Take your time.  Carryout movement with control. There is no race to be perfect. Make a commitment to your body in order to gain the benefits of balance, flexibility and strength. Take control of your life and your mental health.  You deserve the best quality of life possible. Pilates is a mind-body practice that is sure to bring new life into your daily routine.
